Howe, Elias
(9 jul. 1819, Spencer, Mass., EE.UU.–3 oct. 1867, Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Inventor estadounidense. Sobrino de William Howe, comenzó a trabajar como mecánico. En 1846 registró la patente de la primera máquina de coser práctica, la que atrajo poca atención. Se trasladó a Inglaterra a trabajar en su perfeccionamiento para emplearla con cuero y materiales similares. Cuando regresó a EE.UU. el año siguiente, encontró que las máquinas de coser se estaban fabricando y vendiendo en cantidades; finalmente estableció sus derechos de patente en 1854. Su invento pronto revolucionó la industria del vestuario. See also Isaac Merritt Singer.
